February Empties

It's that time again...monthly empties! I was slackin' this month...apparently. I love these posts and videos because you get really solid reviews from things that have been completely used. Not only are you clearing out your stash, but you are able to give people good information. All good things! So let's get into it, shall we!

White Barn Mahogany Teakwood Candle - $20.00
This candle smells like a sexy man - could be why the Mr. wasn't all that jazzed about our house filled with this smell...hmmm. If you've ever walked into an Abercrombie & Fitch store - or even walked by one really, then you've probably been hit in the face with this scent. It is a very strong scent, so if you are into subtlety, this may not be for you. So, although I did like this candle, I probably won't be repurchasing.

Secret Outlast Completely Clean Invisible Solid - $4.99
If you've been reading my blog for a while, you will probably know that my favorite deodorant is the Secret Invisible Solid. So, it may come as no surprise that I have one in this empties post. I don't have a specific scent preference, but I really did like this one. It just smells clean and light and feminine. I will continue to repurchase this deodorant until the end of time...or at which time I no longer need deodorant...*ahem* Moving swiftly on!

Ren Clean Skincare Bio Retinoid Anti-Ageing Concentrate - $60.00
A while back I bought The Fab 4 kit from Ren because I had wanted to try their products, but didn't know what to splash out on. This was in that kit. I had never really heard anything about it, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I had used up the Khiel's Midnight Recovery Concentrate and was in need of a new night time facial oil. I rummaged through my stash and found this one. I am not far off my stint of Claravis (Accutane), so my skin is still on the dry sensitive side and I really need something hydrating and nourishing. I popped this one on and it did the trick! It is on the thick side and a bit more oily than the Khiel's facial oil, but for Winter time and dry sensitive skin, it is great. I prefer a little more of a dry facial oil, but I would totally recommend this for you super dry skinned girlies!

Systane Ultra High Performance Lubricant Eye Drops - $11.99
Just your standard run of the mill lubricating eye drops...my eye doc told me this are the best ones to use and gave me a coupon *gasp*...so I ran out and bought them. This was the sample bottle she gave me. (Side Note: How cute is this little bottle?!)

So yeah, not my most exciting monthly empties, but it is filled with staples.

What staples did you use up this month?

Drugstore Beauty Haul: Walgreens & Target

Who doesn't like a good haul...Personally, I love to read these types of posts and watch haul videos on YouTube, so I thought I'd join in the fun.

I've been trying to cut down my Beauty Wish List lately, and these things that you can find at the drugstore are always the easiest to get your hands on. I purchased these items over a few days - with my own money - because I've heard so many good things about them. Some of them I have tried and can give my thoughts, but some I haven't so I can't report on those yet.

Without further ado...

Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15
I haven't cracked this open yet, but I am almost out of my current day time moisturizer and my sister told me that I needed to check this one out. It's a standard, no frills option. My skin is still really out of whack since being on Claravis a few months ago, so I prefer to use products marketed as sensitive skin friendly. And since having an SPF is a must, I am happy this one has SPF 15 in it.

Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 hr Eyeshadow in 30 Pomegranate Punk
I first saw this color used by Claire over at Ultimakeover.com and I feel in love! I had already used and loved the Color Tattoo's, so I knew this one had to be added to my collection. I'm not normally a bold eyeshadow color gal, but this color just spoke to me. I haven't gotten a chance to wear it out yet, but I've played around with it at home. It is amazing! I feel like even the most colorphobic person could wear this color and get away with it. Oh, and Claire makes it look gorgeous too - what doesn't she make look gorgeous though :)

Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Trio in 380B Walking on Eggshells and 335 Silent Treatment
I've heard countless times that the quality of the Wet n Wild eyeshadow is amazing. For such a bargain friendly price, how could this be?! I had to try it out for myself. So after many YouTube videos proclaiming their love for the Walking on Eggshells and Silent Treatment pallets, I caved and picked them up. They really are nice quality for drug store eyeshadows. They aren't chalky, and the pigmentation is great. I've worn the Walking on Eggshells colors just as they recommend on the package and loved it! It is the perfect lowkey day-to-day eye look and I will be going back to it time and again. The Silent Treatment pallet is along a similar color vein, but a bit darker. I thought it would be a great nighttime look. I'll have to report back on that one, but so far I'm loving the Wet n Wild eyeshadows!

Maybelline The Elixir Color Sensational in 065 Caramel Infused
Estée from EssieButton.com went on and on about these elixirs, so I HAD to try them! Pretty much, if Estée says it's amazing, I have to buy it! And I really really like this formula. It feels like a lipstick, but goes on like a gloss. It is thick and moisturizing, but stays on for a good amount of time. I love the little applicator too. I must pick up more of these...

Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquer in 101 Celestial
When I started seeing the beauty bloggers in the UK reviewing these (called Apocalips in the UK), I knew I had to have one. The colors seemed amazing, and the formula, long lasting. I love no fuss lip products, so when they said the formula was like a stain and a liquid lipstick all in one - I was sold! I have worn this a few times and it really does last for ages. It goes on thick and moisturizing but can be a little drying as the day gets on. Just add a bit of lip balm on top and you are set. The colors are super rich and the doe foot applicator is a tiny bit flexible giving you uber precise application. I will be getting more of these!

NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss in 129 Beige
Can you tell I've been into the My Lips But Better pinky nude lip colors lately...sheesh! I won't go on too much about this product since I've done a Feature Friday on it (here), but I LOVE this lip gloss! It is a lot thinner than the other 2 lip products in this post, but this is a true lip gloss. The others being more like liquid forms of lipstick. It has a creamy and super shiny finish, so you can wear it on its own or layered on top of another product. The smell of this is like cherry candy too! It has a cult following among beauty blogger and vloggers, and I can see why. You NEED this in your collection ASAP!

What beauty treats have you picked up lately? Anything I need to run out and get right now!?

Birthday Traditions: 4 Year Old Style

My youngest little one turned 4 recently, and we had a very simple celebration for him.

I always ask, pre-Birthday, what kind of cake they want, what kind of gift they are hoping to receive, what they want for their Birthday dinner, and whether or not there is something special they'd like to do on their day. I've asked both of my boys these questions since they were old enough to verbalize their wishes, and I just think it makes for a very unique Birthday experience. Instead of the standard party that is dreampt up by us grown ups, it ends up being something creative and special. And I find that my little ones take so much ownership in their day because it was "designed" by them!

Don't get me wrong, Birthday parties are still fun, and we have had them. I just find it really fun to ask my kids what it is that THEY want!

So this year, coming up to my youngest's Birthday, I asked the usual questions:

What kind of cake do you want?
"A chocolate cake with pear (yes, you read right - PEAR) icing and apple sprinkles!"

This answer was given so seriously and mater-of-fact; as if it was as normal as a yellow cake with chocolate icing. I just thought it was the cutest darn thing, and I was determined to give it to him...even if it meant just making green icing and using red sprinkles.

What would you like to get for your Birthday?
"A big tower."

He has always been super decisive when it's come to gifts. The first Christmas that he was able to ask for something, he asked for a small green ball and a backpack. Those were the only things he asked for and he stuck to those answers for the entire lead up to Christmas. So this event was not different. No amount of hoping he'd give me something that I could actually decipher made him change his mind. I was left to figure out what the heck he meant by a "big tower". I took him to store after store hoping he'd point it out. I searched online stores in his view praying he'd tell me when he saw it. Neither of these things happened until about a week before his Birthday...then I couldn't find the stinking thing anywhere!!! Finally, with 5 days to go, I found and ordered it straight away. Imagine my relief when it was exactly what he had been hoping for! Phew...

What would you like for your Birthday dinner?
"Noodles."

He is an extremely simple man...if it's not noodles, it is a peanut butter sandwich and fruit. Because we also hope to enjoy his Birthday dinner, I translated his request into asking his Gramma to make her homemade spaghetti. It was a huge hit - for all! Thanks Gramma!!! (No wine for the little ones, of course.)

Is there anything you'd like to do on your Birthday?
"Are we going to Gramma and Grandad's house?"

Of course we are, if that's what you'd like to do! So, it was an intimate affair with just our family and a set of Grandparents - who live close to us. We made it special with the addition of balloons, a banner, and a shopping trip with Grandad and his older brother (they were on the hunt for new slippers).

When asked what his favorite part of his 4th Birthday was, his answer was simply - "my cake". And it made my day!

Do you have Birthday traditions for your kids?

Feature Friday: Ray-Ban Eye Wear

This weeks Feature Friday isn't so much a product as it is a brand.

We all know how popular Ray-Ban has been throughout the ages. Their glasses never seem to go out of fashion! No matter what the latest trend, you can always rock your Wayfarers or Aviators without fear of shame and ridicule. Some brands just transcend style, and the iconic Ray-Ban is def one of them.

Growing up, my parents had the classic Aviator shades, and I never thought anything of it. Now that I am older, I realize just how hip they really were! Go figure, huh...

Last year I picked up my very first pair of Ray-Ban's for my Birthday. I chose the New Wayfarer Classic in Tortoise with polarized lenses. These things are super comfortable! I can barely tell that they are even on my face. I have really sensitive ears, so anything that sits on my ears needs to be lightweight, and the New Wayfarer's are. They feel sturdy without sacrificing comfort. These aren't the cheapest sunglasses on the market, but they will last forever (if you don't accidentally sit on them in the car...and if your 3 year old doesn't get a hold of them and pretend they are Jackie O - after about 6 mimosas), and...you know they never go out of style!

Recently, I had to go to the dreaded eye doctor...and it was confirmed that I was, indeed, getting older in need of glasses. So, when it came time to choose my frames, I was really excited to find out that Ray-Ban also does regular eyeglasses! I mean, if I'm going to have to wear something all day everyday, I def want them to be comfortable AND sturdy. Boom - both things that I have found Ray-Ban to be! And when I found out that they stand behind their frames for 2 years, no matter what happens to them (please see afore mentioned 3 year old's rendition of Jackie O) they will replace them...I was sold!

I chose the RB5228 also in Tortoise, and have been really happy with my decision. Just like the New Wayfarer sunnies, these eyeglasses are both sturdy and comfortable! I plan to keep these frames for the forseeable future - maybe adding to my collection with other colors (brown/pink - maybe), but I think these are quickly becoming a signature for me. These are prescription glasses though, so you will need to visit an eye doctor for the lenses, but you can always order the frames online and take them along for your prescription lenses. Luckily, I have amazing insurance and mine were a steal - Bonus!

Have you tried Ray-Ban's? What is your favorite style?

Bedside Beauty Picks

Last week I shared with you the beauty contents of my desk, so this week I thought I'd share my bedside beauty picks.

Please excuse my very well loved bedside table. I've had this for about 12 years and it has traveled a few states. I actually like the worn look that furniture gets over time...I can't remember where I got it from, but it was most likely Target or Bed Bath & Beyond. I am positive it's not available anymore, but I'm sure you can find something similar out there.

As you can see, it's not very big, but it has a cubby and a cabinet section to keep all of your stuff contained. I do wish there was a drawer in place of the cubby, but you could always get a basket to act as a drawer.

My night time skincare products live on the table top, along with the video monitor for my youngest son (can never take your eye off that one), a few of my favorite Willow Tree figurine's, and a doily that was handmade by my best friend's mom (she is uber-talented!). I know this isn't the most organized of bedside tables, but it works for me and because I can see all of my night time products, I use them every night.

The current products I am using are Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment, Origins Starting Over eye cream, Lush Celestial Facial Moisturizer, Dior Crème Abricot Fortifying Cream For Nails, The Body Shop Sweet Lemon Body Butter, and Ren Bio Retinoid Anti Ageing Concentrate (this is almost gone - you will see my back up in a minute).

Because I don't have any drawers in my bedside table, I don't keep much else stashed here. However, I do tend to keep my night time skincare backup products in this little cubby along with my iPad (when not in use - which is pretty much only when I am sleeping...).

I am almost out of the night time facial oil that I am currently using, and when I am, I will be moving on to the Pai BioRegenerate™ Rosehip Oil - I'm super excited to get to use this! I also have some backup body butters. My absolute favorites right now are the Soap & Glory ones. And sneakily in the back there you can see my super sexy night guard case...She's a grinder!

That's all she wrote!

What makes its home on your bedside table? How do you organize your products?

And the Nominees Are...

I've never been nominated for anything in my whole life...I did have to think about it just then, but yeah, that's totally a true statement! So I was super surprised to be nominated for the Liebster Award by Jen over at Blush and Fuss! Thanks Jen!

If you've never heard of the Liebster Award (I hadn't either...shhhh.), it is basically an award given to promote other bloggers in hopes of making new friends within the community and maybe, in turn, bring in some new readers.

I think this is awesome, and was totally flattered to know that I had readers out there who wanted to know more about me *blush*.

Anyway, this is how it all works:

  • You must link back to the person who nominated you.
  • You must answer the 11 questions given by the person who nominated you.
  • You pick 11 nominees to answer your questions.
  • You cannot nominate the person who nominated you. (This keeps the wheel in motion.)
  • You must let the nominees know that they've been nominated by you. (How else will they know, duh?!)
Here is what Jen wants to know:

  1. When did you first start wearing makeup?
I think I started wearing mascara when I was like 13 or so...much to my Mother's dismay. By the time I was in college I was over it and just found it easier not to wear anything. Over the last 4 years (I'm 32 now *gasp*) or so I've gotten back into it.
  2. How did you choose your blog name?
I really like G. Love & Special Sauce and one of his songs is called Baby's Got Sauce. It's one of my favorite songs. It speaks to me, ya know :) Plus, I feel like I am a bit of a saucey mama - hence the name!
  3. Any pets?
Yup. A 12 year old chocolate lab named Karma Rae, and we just recently lost our 15 year old dalmatian named Kali - we miss her loads :(
  4. What is your favorite product?
Can a true beauty junkie really narrow it down to just ONE!? I guess I can narrow it down to one type of product - Cleansing Balms. Ever since I discovered cleansing balms, my skin has never been the same!
  5. What is your skincare routine?
In the morning, I use a Cleansing Balm with a wash cloth which I follow up with Ole Henriksen Truth Serum, Clinique All About Eyes, Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 15, and Nivea Lip Balm. In the evening, I use Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash and follow with Ren Bio Retinoid Anti-Ageing Concentrate, Origins Starting Over eye cream, and Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. I also always use a good thick body butter at night to combat the dry scalies!
  6. What would you buy with $500 just for makeup?
Oh my gosh...SOOOOO many things! I guess $500 really doesn't go very far in the high end makeup world, but just a few items on my wish list are: Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Exposed, M.A.C. Lipstick in Crosswires and See Shear, Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour in No 20, Stella by Stella McCartney (the biggun - LOVE this scent), Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler (these things are always sold out - must be amazing), GLAMGLOW YOUTHMUD™ TINGLEXFOLIATE TREATMENT, and Laura Mercier Creme Brulee Honey Bath. And those things only total about $350!
  7. What are your other hobbies aside from makeup?
I like to snowboard, cook, go to see live music, and oddly - needlepoint! I have many layers...
  8. Favorite kind of candy?
I LOVE Lindt chocolate, especially the kind with raspberry inside, but I recently was introduced to Divine 38% Milk Chocolate with Toffee & Sea Salt...there are no words!
  9. What style of makeup do you feel most confident in?
I tend to feel sexy and confident in a smokey eye with little to no base and a pinky nude lip.
  10. Where is your dream honeymoon?
I'm married and we did not have our dream honeymoon, but one day we plan to renew our vows and go to Grand Cayman for a second honeymoon. There is something so sexy about the idea of renting a romantic beach cottage and sleeping with the windows open listening to the waves.
  11. What goal would you like to have accomplished by the end of the year?
By the end of the year, I hope to have sold my current home and have moved to our dream "forever" location.
Enough about me, how about you guys tell me a little about yourselves! I'd like to keep the warm fuzzies going by nominating these lovely ladies for the Liebster Award:

Thanks ladies for the bedtime reading material! I'd love to know more, so if you'd like to play along, here are a few questions for you to answer:
  1. What made you want to start a blog?
  2. If you were given a shopping spree, in what store would you choose to use it?
  3. Do you wear makeup everyday, or just on special occasions?
  4. Who is your favorite band/singer/musician?
  5. What is the one thing, no matter how crap your day was, that can make you smile?
  6. Are you a tech junkie, or just a tech user?
  7. If you were a lip product, what product and color would you be? (lipstick, gloss, balm...)
  8. What is your favorite type of blog post to read/write?
  9. What is your go to type of outfit?
  10. Do you have a favorite meal to cook?
  11. Are you a glass half full, or glass half empty person?
The idea of creating buzz between bloggers makes me smile - so I'm happy to have been introduced to the Liebster Award. Who would you nominate?!

Feature Friday: NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss

I've heard TONS of beauty bloggers and vloggers going on and on about this NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss in Beige, but the only place I could get NYX products locally was just a bit too far. So, when I saw my local Target was now carrying them, I was super excited and ran right out!

I've pretty much worn this everyday since I brought it home, so I knew it would be this week's Feature Friday product.

According to the NYX Cosmetics website, the signature Mega Shine Lip Gloss delivers shine, moisture and softness.

The texture is super creamy with good color payoff, and isn't sticky. I hate sticky lip glosses, so this is very important to me! It also smells just like cherry candy. Who wouldn't want a lip gloss that smells like candy?!

Though the color name, Beige, is a bit misleading when you actually look at the package; on the lips it's a bit more understandable. It is a Your Lips But Better type color, and with such a high shine it can dress up even your most boring of makeup days. Throw some mascara and eyeliner on and slap this gloss on your lips and you are set!

Have you tried any of the NYX Mega Shine Lip Glosses? What color should I try next?!

Bathroom Beauty Storage

I was voted Most Likely to Organize the World in high school. So, it will probably come as no surprise that I love to organize my beauty products. Under my bathroom sink, it used to look like a drug store had blown up, so something had to be done! This is the organization I have come up with, and right now it's working for me very well. I'm sure things will change a hundred times over before it's all said and done, but I thought this might help you guys.

I subscribed to Glossy Box for a while and had all of these amazing, high quality boxes left over. I wanted to use them for something worth while, so I put them to work as my bathroom beauty storage. I also use empty Bath & Body Works 3-Wick Candle jars and random baskets. You don't need to spend a lot of money in your organization projects. Repurpose things you already have. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Coutertop Storage

Here are the things I tend to use everyday. I keep my morning skincare items right by my sink so they are at hand. It makes my morning skincare routine go by that much quicker when I am groggy and bleary eyed. Behind my skincare bits, I keep a random metal basket which houses all of the makeup items I am using that week. Some are new items I am testing out, and some are just my go to makeup picks. My eyelash curlers and tweezers are stuffed in there too so they are easy to find. The last thing on this side of my sink is my toothbrush and toothpaste. I prefer to use my electric toothbrush when I'm at home and take a manual one when I travel, but I always use this Aquafresh Extreme Clean toothpaste. It's my favorite!

On the right hand side of my sink, I like to keep all of my cleansers so I can grab whatever my skin is in need of that day. I also have a Bath & Body Works Foaming Hand Soap (I am obsessed with all things lemon, if you didn't already know.), my tangle teezer, tissues, and a repurposed empty candle jar full of hair care items that I'm currently trying out. There is also a random box of hair color (the John Freida Precision Foaming color is my favorite drug store hair color)...I've been meaning to color my hair for a week now, but just can't get motivated.

Under Sink Storage

I know there is nothing as glamorous as under sink storage, but it's pretty much all I have in the way of cabinets in my bathroom so it'll have to do. I made the most of the space I had to work with and stacked empty beauty subscription boxes and labeled them to make it easy to find what I was looking for. I keep other random extras in whatever space if left (ie. the sneaky bars of soap and a backup hand soap).

I have 2 little ledges (I hasten to call them shelves because they are to shallow to hold much of anything.) inside my cabinet that I use to keep bigger items. Here on the left hand side, I keep my makeup brushes, M.A.C. brush cleaner, backup hand sanitizers, and my larger backup hand creams. I also have a tiny little clay dish I got from a Renaissance Festival years ago that I keep my rings in.

On the right hand side, I keep a super random bunch of things like my sonic jewelry cleaning device and the cleaning fluid, rubbing alcohol, baby shampoo that I use to deep clean my makeup brushes, a Mario Badescu Drying Lotion (because it needs to be stored standing up), my collection of empty Lush pots waiting to be turned in for a FREE Fresh Face Mask (almost there!), an oil free eye makeup remover that I got strictly to use with false lashes (which I have yet to wear), a spare deodorant (Secret Invisible Solid is my fave one), some Vaseline, and my perfume stash which, at the moment, is rather sad (Stella is almost gone, and I am so so sad about this! I WILL be repurchasing ASAP).

Here in the middle of the cabinet, I have my labeled repurposed Glossy Boxes! This makes me so happy...I know it's strange, but it really does! I have skin, hair, and body care bits on the left. A random box (repurposed Birchbox) of fragrance samples, my basket for empties, and some Up & Up Makeup Wipes in the center. And all of my makeup bits on the right.

I tend to keep all of my full sized and also sample sized items together in these boxes. So whatever I'm not using on the daily, I keep here. I love looking through these from time to time (shopping my stash, if you will), because I always find things I forgot I had and it's like I've really been shopping!

Finally, I have a large basket that I keep all of my bath products in. This sits right in front of all of my Glossy Boxes under the sink. Everything is right here when I am wanting to take a bath. If I can see it, I am more likely to use it. Plus, the smell that comes wafting out every time I open this cabinet is AH.mazing!

That is how I organize all of my beauty bits in my bathroom. It is the best I can do with minimal cabinet and drawer space, but I think it works pretty well for me.

I'd love to know how you store beauty items in your bathroom. If you care to share, tweet me pics @sauceymama!

Desktop Beauty Picks

As you can see, my desk is a wild assortment of all things. I thought I'd share with you the beauty picks that make the cut to share my work days with me. Some of these things I use every day, and some of them have landed here after I've used them once or twice and...let's be honest, I was just too lazy to relocate them. So, let's get into it.

Please ignore my extremely dusty keyboard...this is real life, and my real life is just too darn chaotic to spend time dusting my keyboard!

  1. Nail File:  For some reason I tend only to think about cutting and filing my nails while I'm sitting at my desk...probably because using a keyboard is rather frustrating with super long nails. Also, the cold dry weather has been wreaking havoc on my tips.
  2. Nail Clippers:  Again, because I'm always in need of a trim while at the computer, I keep my favorite nail clippers on hand. These are a cute pair of Tweezerman straight edge clippers. They are super sharp and really comfortable to use. I highly recommend them. I can't find the purple version that I have, but you can get the exact same pair in pink on their website!
  3. Hand Lotion:  Apparently, you can never have too many hand lotions while at work, because I have not one, but 3 different ones! I have a Bath & Body Works Freshwater Cucumber Body Lotion (which I think is no longer available), Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange Body Butter, and Vaseline Intensive Rescue Repairing Moisture. I tend to use the Pacifica one daily. It's super citrusy and feels really nice on the skin. It also doesn't take forever to sink in, so I can get back to work quickly after applying.
  4. Lip Balm:  This is a MUST have all day erryday! I like the Nivea lip balms because they do the job, have a nice texture, and are really inexpensive! The one I am using right now is the A Kiss of Milk & Honey which I find to be my favorite next to the Lemon Olive Oil one.
  5. Lip Stick:  Here is a perfect example of using a product a few times and being too lazy to put it back where it belongs...Like I said folks, this is real life! When I am using a lip product during the day for a meeting or whatnot, I tend to get ready and put it on last - normally when I am sitting at my desk about to run out the door. So lip sticks and glosses end up piling up! This one is a Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in 015 Tutti Frutti and I love it! Perfect for Spring and Summer, but I do confess to using it in the Winter too...shhhh.
  6. Hand Sanitizer:  I have a constant phobia of getting sick, and the Winter time it's at its peak so I keep hand sanitizer on deck. Right now there are 2 that I've been going back and forth between: Bath & Body Works Island Margarita PocketBac and Fortune Cookie Soap OCD Hand Sanitizer in Dirty Hoe. I like both of these equally, and the scents are both amazing!
  7. Candles:  It's no big secret that I love candles, and Bath & Body Works candles are my favorite. Don't worry, I don't burn them where they are now...that would be dangerous! But right now, I have a mini Cranberry Pear Bellini candle and an empty Honeysuckle candle jar (it still smells amazing!).
  8. Hidden Extra:  After I took the photos for this post, I noticed there was a sneaky Fortune Cookie Soap Solid SPF Stick in "...Where the Sun Don't Shine". Yeah, I know I don't really need any extra SPF for sitting indoors, away from windows at my desk. I think this is another item that was deposited here and I was just too lazy to put it away. I'm pretty sure I took this out of my purse one day and forgot about it...Oops!
So, what do you guys keep on your desks? Am I missing out on anything that is a desktop/work day must have?!

Feature Friday: M.A.C. Zoom Lash

Welcome to this weeks Feature Friday!

So this week I've been truly obsessed with a mascara. I've never fallen in love with a mascara after first use, but that has changed.

I received a little sample of the M.A.C. Zoom Lash mascara in Zoomblack in the mail last week (I think I signed up to receive it through their Facebook page a while back.). I was excited to try it because I am forever on the hunt for the perfect mascara. And straight out of the gate, this stuff was exactly what I've been looking for!

I have naturally long lashes that are already a bit curled on their own, but I really like the false eye lash effect. I've never worn false eye lashes, but I really like having the extreme look even on a daily basis. So, I want jet black color, super lengthening, and a bit of volume - volume isn't really as important to me as the length. I do tend to use an eye lash curler before my mascara just to give some extra umpfh, then I go straight in coating my top and bottom lashes. I have rather large eyes, so really slapping it on there isn't a big problem for me.

The M.A.C. website says that Zoom Lash mascara gives major drama that lasts all day, feels light and supple with no smudging.

I find this to be quite a wet formula and the color is SUPER black. You really have to let it dry for a few seconds after you coat your top lashes so you don't get any transfer to your brow bone. But once it's set, it does last all day and it doesn't leave me with panda eyes by the end of the day. I don't think it is a waterproof formula, so I was skeptical of the "no smudging" claim, but they were right.

The wand on this mascara is rather small and skinny as compared to others I've used and liked, but apparently it has some special 3-sided fibers to get the job done.

Top: Nothing on. Bottom: Curled and M.A.C. Zoom Lash on top and bottom lashes.

I've used this mascara, alone, for the entire week and am seriously obsessed! As soon as I get to town, I will be purchasing the full size of this. I think I may have found my Holy Grail mascara!

Have you tried M.A.C. Zoom Lash? What are your thoughts on it?

What have you been loving this week?!

Making Marriage Work

This month marks my husband and my 11th year of marriage. In honor of that, I thought I'd discuss marriage. Namely, marriage as it pertains to young families, because this is where I am in life. This isn't meant to be a heavy post. It is just a compilation of the things that we've found work for us. If it happens to help any of you, then my goal has been accomplished!

February is the unofficial month of LOVE, so I figured it would be appropriate to talk about how marriage or even just long term committed relationships can stand the test of time. Obviously, the things that work for us may not fit in with your situation, but I think the basis of these things can help give anyone insight to a healthy relationship.

Be Respectful
I feel a bit like my mother saying this, but seriously being respectful of your significant other can be the biggest factor in your happiness. When you give your partner the same respect that you desire, it is much more likely to be reciprocated.

You Don't Have to Tell Each Other Everything
I know this seems counterproductive, but I'm serious. I don't mean this in a sneaky conniving way. What I do mean though is that you don't have to say everything that comes to your mind. Just like you wouldn't want to be able to read everyone's thoughts all the time. You wouldn't want to know exactly what your partner was thinking at all times. It's ok to leave somethings to the imagination. Sometimes things can come out wrong, or the timing is bad, or maybe what you want to say is really mean and nasty (say when your husband has done something extra stupid). However, if you are honest with yourself, will saying what is on your mind be helpful? More often than not the answer is no. This ties in nicely with the whole "Pick Your Battles" thing. By the time you've stopped to think about it, you'll realize it's just not worth it, and most of the time you no longer harbor any ill will.

Be Your Own Person
I say this countless times to friends that are getting married. Just because you are joining forces and getting married, you don't have to stop being yourself. As a matter of fact, being yourself is why your significant other has chosen to take the world on with you by their side!

Getting married and starting a family adds new dimension to who you are, but it shouldn't change your core. Evolve into a better you, by all means, but don't turn into your mate just because you now file a joint tax return each year. Trust me, they will thank you for this one!

Be Silly
This one is easy for me...I'm random and silly as a rule, but when my husband cuts up I remember why I fell in love with him in the first place. I think it's because I know he feels comfortable enough to act like a clown. And really, it's not his character to just be silly - so when he is, I love it even more. Life is such a tough thing to trudge through, so smiling and laughter is a much needed addition to any relationship. If you can laugh with, and even at each other, the stressful times will go just that little bit easier.

Do the Little Things
No one expects you to woo them for the rest of your life. It's just not practical. But I think we can all agree that it's really nice to have someone do the little things for you. When you are out shopping, grab that thing you know your partner has been lusting after (for no reason). Leave little notes lying around where you know your sweetie will find them. Make their favorite dinner or a special dessert just because. I think we get a bit too wrapped up in the day to day, and we forget to show our loved ones that we really do care. The little things mean so much more to me than big pricey offerings - though those are nice from time to time ;)

Give Each Other Space
We are so rush rush these days that we spend little quality time with the people we truly love. We are forced to spend most of our days working to pay the bills. And as important as I think it is to spend time together, I think it is equally important to spend time apart. It's healthy to spend time with friends doing things that you love. At the end of the day, if you give each other that space, the time you spend together becomes that much sweeter!

Disagree
Again, maybe this seems a bit counterproductive, but it's a must. Similar to the be your own person tip, no 2 people are exactly the same and that's ok! It's healthy to have differing opinions. Keep your individuality in tact and speak up when you disagree. I'm not saying to force your opinion on your partner, but offering up a different point of view can't hurt. You never know when you will learn something, or open someone else's eyes to something they hadn't thought of before.

I think the main thing I have learned through the years is to be yourself and to give your partner free reign to be themselves too. There is a reason you decided to spend the rest of your life with them, why not embrace it for the long haul!

Have you found ways to keep your marriage happy and healthy?
